USB-C Is Only the Connector: How to Check Video, Charging, and Data Before You Buy

One connector, several possible capabilities

1. Video output: look for DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt

4. “Supports 4K” is incomplete information
Resolution alone does not describe the display experience. A hub may advertise 4K output while supporting only 30Hz at that resolution.
For presentations, video playback, and occasional use, 4K at 30Hz may be acceptable. For regular desktop work—especially scrolling, pointer movement, and animation—many users will find 60Hz noticeably smoother.
Check all of the following:
- Maximum resolution
- Maximum refresh rate at that resolution

Verify 4K at 60Hz on the exact HDMI or DisplayPort output and confirm that the computer supports the required display mode over its USB-C port. “4K supported” without a refresh rate is not enough.
For fast external SSDs
